As we age, we sometimes wonder, “Will I end up in a nursing home?” Although continuing care facilities are vastly improved from what they were even twenty years ago, it’s not anyone’s goal to give up their home and move to a nursing home. There are, however, simple steps you can take that might help you live in your own home well into old age.
First, your home must be safe. Clean out clutter and debris, so you aren’t in danger of falling. One broken hip can be a fast track to a nursing home, and depending upon how you heal, you might be there for a long time.
You need to be able to take care of your daily needs like bathing and meal preparation. By installing some grab bars in your tub area, or installing a large, walk-in shower with a seat, you can take care of your personal needs easily without help.
If you keep active and take a walk down the street, or even around your home, you’ll maintain strength. Eating healthy foods will keep you well-nourished and strong. Exercise your brain as well as your body to stay mentally sharp, and you may avoid needing nursing-home care.
